Urie había enviado a sus hijos al río por algunas tapas de su barco. Como ellos se tardaban él fue a buscarlos, cuando notó a unos 300 pies de distancia a unos 75 pies en el aire un objeto azul cielo silueteado contra las paredes empinadas del cañón en su lado opuesto. (El cañón es de alrededor de 400 pies de profundidad y 1200 pies de ancho en ese punto). El objeto estaba viajando a 75 pies en el aire (300 pies por debajo del borde del cañón) y era plenamente visible. Urie declara que el color azul cielo pudo no haber sido notado contra el cielo. Dice que «no giraba como un trompo». Sin embargo, dijo que los árboles sobre los que pasaba casi directamente no sólo se doblaban con el viento como si un avión hubiera pasado sino que «giraban en la parte de arriba como si estuvieran en un vacío».
Keith Urie, un hijo, de ocho años de edad dijo que vio la máquina bajando por el cañón dirigiéndose de Este a Oeste y siguiendo los contornos del terreno. Billy, de diez, otro hijo, lo vio casi inmediatamente. Ambos lo observaron volar fuera de la vista detrás de un árbol en cuestión de un momento.
NOTAS DEL AGENTE: Urie parece completamente sincero sobre el incidente y parece ser un hombre sobrio, de edad media.

Con 194 incidentes eliminados, permanecen treinta y cuatro que contienen alguna evidencia pero no tienen aparentemente lista una explicación. Esta declaración es cierta sólo bajo la suposición de que la evidencia es aceptada como fiable y precisa. Cuando se toman en consideración factores psicológicos y fisiológicos, todos estos incidentes pueden ser explicados racionalmente, como lo señaló la Rand Corporation y (ilegible) del Laboratorio Aero-Médico del Comando del Material Aéreo (Ver apartados «B» y «C»)

Incidente No. 75 «“ 13 agosto 1947, 1300 horas, Snake River Canyon, Idaho. Un granjero junto con sus dos hijos, y diez y ocho años de edad, vieron un objeto moviéndose hacia abajo del cañón. Estuvo a la vista sólo momentáneamente a una distancia de 300 pies, y aproximadamente 75 pies sobre el terreno. El objeto hizo un sonido silbante, y era de color azul cielo. El granjero dudó la posibilidad de su visibilidad si se le veía contra el cielo. Los niños contaron de una turbina sin humo o llamas de escape saliendo del aparato a través de las cuales podían ver la luz del día. Claramente no hay nada astronómico en este incidente. Aparentemente debe clasificarse con otros avistamientos de discos bona fide.
Sin embargo, destacan dos puntos: el color «azul cielo» y el hecho de que los árboles «giraban en la parte de arriba como si estuvieran en un vacío». ¿Pudo esto, entonces, haber sido un remolino atmosférico viajando rápidamente?

Una de las características más interesantes del período de 1947 es el gran número de avistamientos de discos. Esto no quiere decir que no había una diversidad de fenómenos reportados, pero muchos de estos «relatos de discos o platillos» son extremadamente notables porque pocos períodos tuvieron tan altos porcentajes de observaciones que describen verdaderos objetos del tipo «tuercas y tornillos». Por ejemplo, el avistamiento de Smoke River Canyon, cerca de Twin Falls, Idaho. El 13 de agosto a las 13:00 MST un objeto en forma de disco azul voló debajo de las paredes de ese cañón del río. En su vuelo, el objeto aceleró por encima de un muy respetado granjero, A. C. Urie. Sus dos hijos, Keith y Billy, también fueron testigos del evento, cuando venían a través del río para encontrarse con su padre. Los tres testigos lo vieron pasar cerca de 75 pies sobre unos álamos, haciendo que las copas de los árboles se doblaran y se balancearan como si estuvieran en un vacío. En ese momento el objeto, que había descendido a unos 300 pies por debajo del borde del cañón de 400 pies de alto, se convirtió en silueta contra sus paredes empinadas, asemejando a un «plato de pastel invertido». Urie estima que era de unos veinte pies de ancho por diez pies de espesor con un tubo horizontal o poste que sobresalía que emitía llamas brillantes[1].
Este bosquejo de la Fuerza Aérea se inspiró en una versión muy similar en el Twin Falls Times News que fue tomado de varios dibujos que hizo A. C. Urie que representa a un objeto en forma de tina. Urie no hizo ninguna referencia a un chorro de escape en su relato, aunque, tanto el Times News y el boceto de la Fuerza Aérea añaden este detalle, aparentemente como una explicación del humo que los observadores vieron salir del objeto.

Para el momento en que las tres primeras semanas de la primera gran ola «platillo volador» del verano de 1947 habían pasado, se había producido una conflagración de tales informes en todo Estados Unidos y Canadá que había habido poco tiempo para que cualquier persona – civil o militar «“ se parara y reflexionara. Para muchos, la historia nacional se había convertido en local cuando brotaron los informes de testigos de las grandes ciudades y de los pequeños pueblos a través de 45 estados. Pero para aquellos que se mantenían al tanto de la situación nacional, el punto focal parecía centrarse en el noroeste del Pacífico, y en particular en los estados de Oregón y Washington.
En parte se debió al hecho de que el primer avistamiento reportado de «discos voladores» se había producido cerca del Monte Rainier en el estado de Washington. Casi todos los relatos de prensa en las próximas semanas mencionarían ese avistamiento, y tanto el Mt. Rainier como el estado de Washington se convirtieron casi en sinónimo del fenómeno en la mente del público. Otras primicias del Noroeste del Pacífico incluían un avistamiento simultáneo de varios testigos de hasta 20 discos por la policía de Portland, Oregón y los alguaciles en Vancouver, Washington, el 4 de julio de 1947. Y la primera imagen de un disco volador que se hizo nacional – también del julio 4 – fue la de Frank Ryman, un fotógrafo de la Guardia Costera, de 27 años de edad, que sacó su imagen desde la orilla norte del lago Washington, cerca de Seattle.
